INTERVIEW
BORN TO LOSE
by Taron Cochrane, November 2006

Hi there. How are ya doing?

Larry Hargrave: Doing pretty good. We just got home from our first european tour, and it was a blast. We were gone for about eight weeks, so we're all a little tired.

Can you tell me a little about the band.

Hmmm, well, there's five of us. We started playing together in 2000, have put out 5 records including "Sweet Misery" on Sailor's Grave, and our friends all worry about our drinking.

The new album is amazing! You guys have done some massive touring in support of it. What has the crowd reaction been like? Is the word getting out there?

Touring is great. It’s hard to beat seeing the world with your best friends, playing the music you love, and making life long friends everywhere you go. The crowd response has been great as well, which makes it a lot easier. It's also the only thing any of us are good at.

Speaking of touring, obviously, you guys have a weakness for spirits. Any drunken adventures you'd be willing to share?

Unfortunately, most of the good stories fall under that "what happens on the road, stays on the road" blanket, so I'll just say we like to have a good time.

On the road, what albums/artists are essential (for sanity's sake)?

Sixer, Far Fom Finished, and Darkbuster get played everyday in our van. We listen to them all so much its become kind of a joke between us.

You recently released a video for the song, "Sweet Misery". Who directed it and what is the premise behind it?

Uh...our friend Wally directed it, and the premise is we play live because we can't afford to do anything fancy..? I thought it turned out pretty cool though. Originally there was a part in it with Ben vomiting, but that was cut out for some reason.

Who or what has inspired you to be where you are today?

We get most of our current inspiration from our friends in other bands. Bands like Far From Finished, Hudson Falcons, and Rat City Riot, who are aout there busting theirs sacks just like us. I have nothing but respect for everyone in those bands....eventhough Mark from FFF can get a little mouthy. :)

What lies ahead for Born To Lose?

More touring. We plan to do another full U.S. tour very soon, and hopefully we can get up to canada also. I think lung cancer and liver failure are not too far away as well.

Some of the coolest designs I have seen in a long time have been produced by your band. Whether it's the band's logo, gig posters, or belt buckles and shirts. Where is this stuff coming from?

We all thank Kevin for that. He has become a ninja on photoshop.

Thanks for the great interview! Any advice you'd like to share with us before you go?

Start and band and go on tour. You will have the time of your life.
