OFF WITH THEIR HEADS/ THE MEASURE (SA) "Split" Split 7" Released by: Chunksaah Records Here's the latest thing from Chunksaah, the label that never fails to impress me. Off With Their Heads are from Minneapolis, MN a place that, at least myself, haven't heard much from in terms of punk rock before. However, this band is great and will probably become one of my new favorites. This is a poppy punk rock outfit with somewhat gritty vocals. Both their songs, "With You" and "Just Want You To Know", are very catchy and the lyrics are great. This is mid-tempo poppy punk at it's very best. Look these guys up! On the other side of this split we have The Measure (SA). Readers of MutinyZine already knows what I'm gonna say about this band. Yes, I love 'em... Two great new songs I haven't heard before, in fact their best two songs so far. I just love the band's signature lo-fi recordings along with Lauren's vocals. What else can I say? Order this one today! /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

THE SKITZOS! "Faster! Louder! Better!" 7" Released by: Longshot Music The Skitzos play fast and furious snotty punk rock and they're from Calgary. This is the kind of record that I like to listen to maybe once a year. It's good, but not that good. I like th b-side the most and especially the song "Set it Off" which is a little less fast than the rest of the three tunes. I think this is the band's first release and I believe they'll be better with time. They're just not "there" yet... Totally ok to be a debut but not exactly the best band I've heard. Average punk rock. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

EVERY TIME I DIE "The Big Dirty" CD Released by: Ferret Music Up until this album, every album by this band has sounded different than all the previous ones. "The Big Dirty", however sounds like the b-side to "Gutter Phenomenon". Don't get me wrong though, I love it. If I had to describe "The Big Dirty" (or the band in general) in one word, it'd be "clever". Everything about them is clever: the drums, guitar riffs, timing, style, and especially the lyrics. Songs like "Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Battery" keep with the smart-assed nature of the band, which has always drawn me to them. And the music video for "We’rewolf" is honestly the best music video I've ever seen. There's a lot of people that liked nothing from this band after "Hot Damn", but face it, there isn't going to be another album like it. But as long as albums like "The Big Dirty" are coming out of them, I can certainly live with that. This is a must have. /Vic Castello, Mutinyzine.com |

ALTERNATE ACTION "Self Titled" 7" released by: Longshot Music I am definitely not a fan of the whole Oi! genre and I don't know too much about it either. Anyway, Alternate Action from Canada are doing a pretty good job. I think they remind me of band's such as Cock Sparrer but not really that good. I don't really know who else I could compare them to... But I do know that there are tons of awful and really crappy Oi! bands out there. Alternate Action is not one of them. They're kinda cool actually. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

PAPERMOONS "Self Titled" 7" released by: Team Science Records Papermoons is an indie-duo from Houston, Texas. This 7" is the first release from the band and it's not bad at all. The info-note that came along with this record described the sound as sweet and breezy with an americana feel to it. I think that pretty much sums it up. Both sides of the 7" are very good but personally I like the A-side a bit better. Those two songs have drums on them which takes the Papermoons to another level. The harmonica on "California" is awesome as well. I like the vocals a lot as well as the structure of the songs. A perfect record for sleepy sunday mornings. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

YOUNG LIVERS "The New Drop Era" LP/CD released by: No Idea / Kiss of Death Records Gainsville newcomers the Young Livers plays a brand of music that reminds me of The Draft but with a bit more anger. "The New Drop Era" is the groups debut record and the eight songs that are on here are all very good. There's a lot of energy and the vocals and lyrics are fantastic. I really like the guitars on this one. Throughout the record the riffs are really cool and the one that kicks off "Means of Buoyancy" is just awesome. Great song-writing, tons of energy, great band. I'm really into this rockin' kind of post-hardcore right now and this one will be played a lot. Look 'em up people! /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

OPERATION IVY "Self Titled" CD released by: Hellcat Records It feels kind of meaningless to review this album. I'm pretty sure that most of you might have a copy of it already. Anyway, Hellcat are re-releasing this classic 1989 album. The original one was put out by Lookout back in the day and it sold more than 500,000 copies! This new version is exactly the same except that it's a digipak. What can I say, there's a ton of classic ska-punk on this record. It's a milestone. For those of you who somehow managed to miss this band it's the group that Tim and Matt from Rancid was in during the late 80's. These are all the songs they ever put out thrown together on one CD including "Knowledge", "Soundsystem", "Healthy Body" and 24 others. If you don't have it - Get it... /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

HARRINGTON SAINTS "Self Titled" 7" released by Pirates Press Records I've been waiting a long time for a new release from Pirates Press and now it's here! California street rockers the Harrington Saints deliver 4 tunes of really really good pub punk rock/ Oi!. A lot of the time I associate this type of punk with really crappy bands, but these guys are really fucking good! There's a ton of attitude but all in a postive way. The sound is great songs are awesome. The Saints play three rockin' tunes of their own and a live-cover of Blitz's "Razors In the Night". The cover is fantastic but it's definitely the band's originals that I like the most. "Working Class Friday Night" and "Don't Blame Me" are already classics at the MutinyZine headquarters. It's on white vinyl and there's a free CD with every 7". The artwork kicks ass (come on, it's Pirates Press we're talking about...). Every pub or bar should get their hands on a copy of this one. Street Rock'n'Roll at it's very finest! /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

THE NEGATIVES (SWE) "At the End of the Rope" CD released by: Bad Dog Records I haven't heard that many new street punk bands from Sweden lately so this CD was cool to hear. But, the band is far from new. I'm not sure how I managed to miss these guys 'cause they're quite good. This is in fact their third album and I like it a lot. "At the End of the Rope" holds fourteen songs with a sound comparable to bands such as Street Dogs or The Business. The sing-along-choruses brings Da Skywalkers to mind which is cool. The recording is great and the songs are catchy as hell and well played. Definitely a band to check out if you want a quality street punk record. "Smiling Faces" and the opening track "Kick It In" are my favorite songs on the album but the truth is that most of the tunes are really good. Pay these guys a visit on MySpace and give 'em a listen. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

CLIFF GREENWOOD "...and The Monsters" CD released by: May Cause Dizziness Records Acoustic rock'a'billy punk with a touch of country from California. Cliff Greenwood's new record is cool. I really like Cliff's voice and along with acoustic guitar. The fact that this is an acoustic project does not mean that there's no energy. All the tunes have a really punky approach to them and the songs are pretty fast. Miles from the Sore Thumbs are playing the lead guitar and this record which is really cool. If I had to name a favorite song I'd say "45's" in which Cliff expresses his love for the good old 7" record. I really like the drums on that track and it has a really catchy chorus. Great stuff! /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

SLICK 46 "Move Aside" CD released by: Self Released Australian's Slick 46 play street punk with a touch of Oi. There are some parts on the record that sounds a bit like Cock Sparrer and "Time Will Tell" sounds like something that Swedish Voice of A Generation could have written. It's not bad but I'm not exactly crazy about it either. Look 'em up if it sounds like your kind of music. Ok. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

SPEAKYOURHEART "Under These Lights We Are Transparent" CD released by: Engineer Records Speakyourheart from the UK play some sort of post-hardcore/ emo. The band's vocalist sings in a very shrill tone which I find really annoying to listen to. My ears get all tired... The music is ok. I think the guitar sound is kind of cool. Sound almost as if they are playing the entire record on acoustic guitars but I guess it's just the distortion that has been turned down. Because of the vocals I think the instrumental intro is the best song on the record. This band is not that good... /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

RUNNING ON FUMES "The Beginning of the End" CD released by: Fallen Angel Records This band from Long Beach, CA play punk rock with an attitude. These guys sound like they've been infuenced by The Stitches, Smogtown and similar SoCal bands. If you're into that style of punk rock you'll like ROF. There's 11 songs on the band's debut album. The best song on this one is called "Slipping Through the Cracks" and it rules. This record was out on tape at the famous Westbeach Recorders so the sound is cool, obviously. Cool record, great songs. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

THE FIRE STILL BURNS "Self Titled" 7" released by: Engineer Records/ Koi Records Very good melodic hardcore in the vein of Ensign or Lifetime! This 2-song 7" really made my day. "Good As New" on the a-side is fantastic but my favorite one of the two is "My Assault on the World Starts Now". It's fast, melodic and it has some cool hooks. I have to look up this band's earlier stuff 'cause this one is amazing. Orange vinyl. Sweet! /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

WE'RE ALL BROKEN "Ambrosia" 7" released by Engineer Records / Koi Records We're All Broken play some kind of indie hardcore that is very good at times but also a bit too complex for my taste. On this 7" the band has a really good singer which they now, unfortunately, has parted ways with. It's a shame, he was good. There's 3 songs on here and my favorite is the acoustic one. It's called "Baltimore", it's the least complex one and it's really good. All songs are pretty long which makes me loose interest after a while. The band is not bad but it's not really my style. The record comes in a good looking gatefold sleeve and it's on colored vinyl. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

ATTICA! ATTICA! "Dead Skin, Dried Blood" CD released by: Red Leader Records This is the solo project of Aaron Scott who was in Marathon and De La Hoya. The record is really good. I didn't like it that much at first but the songs have really grown on me. This record is packed with good singer/songwriter stuff, pop-punk, inde, piano-songs and americana. Scott's has a great voice which gives the whole CD a really professional feel. My personal favorite is the country tune "Way Down in Gitmo". The song is about America's fear of terrorists and the Guantánamo Bay detention camp. I really love the way Scott has managed to write a song on this subject in such a funny way. Sarcasm is fun as hell. I also really like "A Dirge For the Underground" which has almost a Bad Religion sound to it. Look this record up and give it a few spins. You'll like it. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

DEAFENING DAY "Self Titled" CD released by: Self Released This is a pretty crappy indie band from Sweden. There are mostly slow songs on the record and the singer sounds bored as hell. I can't really blame him. Not much happens on this record. I almost fell asleep... /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

THE NEW DRESS "Where Our Failures Are" CD released by: Red Leader Listen up! This is a good one! I listened through The New Dress' debut about 20 times the day I got it. The band consists of a guy named Bill a girl named Laura and a guitar. I'm not sure how to describe their sound but it's somewhere between folk and punk, it's acoustic and it's awesome. There's a great cover of Billy Bragg's "I don't Need This Pressure, Ron" as well as a great cover of "Worker's Song" by Ed Pickford. Both covers rule but the band's own material is even better. My favorites are "Turn It Off" and "Murderous Bugs With Giant Needle Knives". Both Laura and Bill sings really good and the lo-fi recording gives the album that gritty edge that I love. Let's sum it up: Honesty, rawness, positivity, great lyrics & kick-ass folksongs. Buy it! /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

ANGERS CURSE "S/T" Demo CD released by: Angers Curse Sweden's got a whole bunch of good bands at the moment and one of them is Angers Curse from Västerås. Three quarters of the band is in, or has been in, my favorite Swedish hardcore band Break Me, so to me the quality of this demo wasn't exactly unexpected. Angers Curse is slightly harder and a bit more straight on than Break Me, which actually fits singer Mangel better than Break Me did. I can't say enough good things about this band. I love all 6 songs on the CD but my favorite is "Get Out". "Get the fuck out/ I’m not your kind/ I’m not like you/ And I will never fucking be". Check 'em out at their MySpace and order a copy of this one! Quality old school hardcore from Sweden! /Christer, Mutinyzine.com |

ROBOTS AND EMPIRE "Omnivore" CD released by: Trip Machine Laboratories Fuzzy rock with occasional hardcore hooks. That's how I would describe Robots & Empire. These guys are very good at what they're doing but I still find it rather boring. The recording however have quality and was put down on tape at Atomic Recording (Madball, The Hope Conspiracy). Not my style of music at all but if you like it fuzzy you just might like this one a lot. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

ATOMIC GARDEN "Reversing The Curse" CD released by: Teddy Bear/ Dumb Inc Records Here's a band that remind me of a band named Therapy?, remember them? Anyway, these dudes are from France and have been playing together since 2000. I like it a lot when the singer screams out, like he does in the last part of "Skeleton Key". When he do that this band is awesome. But even though the band is good this record doesn't keep me all that interested the whole way through. A few more fast songs would make this one better. But hey, check 'em out, they're worth it. Very professional. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS "All Things Move Toward Their End" CD released by: No Idea Records Off With Their Heads have quickly turned into one of my new favorite bands. This CD is a collection of all their 7-inches put out between 2003 and 2006. "Janie" and "Five Across The Eyes" kicks this CD off, and what a way to start a record! These two songs are amazingly cool. OWTH's poppy punk rock really has made an impact on me. I love the simplicity of the songs, the raw vocals and the energy of it all. It's brilliant! The peaks of the record are the two opening tracks as well as the fast "The Beijing Cocktail" and "Fuck You, You T-shirt Necktie Wearing Motherfucker". There's also a brand new song on this collection called "Sadie" that sounds a bit like something by The Measure (SA). This CD is one of the best ones I've heard this year. Now I just have to figure out a way to get my hands on all the original 7-inches... Fantastic record! /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

SUB CITY DWELLERS "When the Beat Starts to Pound" CD released by: Longshot Music The Sub City Dwellers' debut album contains a wide range of influences from Ska to soul, from punk to reggae and it all comes with a latin twist. I like it a lot. This 7-piece band from Winnipeg should be proud of what they've accomplished. Even though there's a lot of stuff going on when the band starts playing it never gets confusing, it just feels right. 15 songs is usually a couple too much but on this album it works. Each song stand on it's own and the record feels fresh all the way through. My favorite song is the latin-flavoured opening track "Give Up the Gun Tonight" and I really dig the organ part in "Hey Brother, Don't Be Shameful". Roots Rock Rebels - from Canada (!). Very good. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |

THE WIDDERS "Down For Life" CD released by: Fallen Angel Records When this one starts spinning you'll probably think of Motörhead with a stand-up bass. At least, that's what I did. The Widder's album holds 11 songs but even though it's well produced and got some pretty good songs on it I'm not really liking it. I'm pretty tired of rockabilly influenced punk by now. If you're into that whole thing you'll probably like the Widders 'cause they do know how it's done. However, stand-up basses and songs about the devil doesn't do it for me. /Christer Davidsson, Mutinyzine.com |
